NORMAN — A longtime general aviation aircraft manufacturer announced plans Thursday to expand its Norman facility.
Commander Aircraft Corp. said it will build an $8 million production facility for its single-engine aircraft. The company already has two hangars at Max Westheimer Airport.
The new building will be 100,000 square feet and situated adjacent to the airport. It will allow Commander to put its aircraft back into production with new models, and have space for the inventory of parts, service, storage and repairs.
“We see international opportunities for the Commander model. We anticipate an increase in demand for new models, and we looked at several different markets for our expansion and production facility,” said Borui Mao, general manager.
Construction is expected to begin within the next three years and the company anticipates hiring 30-50 aerospace and mechanical engineering employees once full production is reached.
Maureen Hammond, interim president of the Norman Economic Development Coalition, said the expansion would lead to an economic impact of $75 million over the next decade.
Commander aircraft were first produced in 1972. The company said there are more than 750 planes that will need continuing parts, service and support in the future.
Commander Aircraft Corp. is not related to Aero Commander, another Oklahoma company that ceased aircraft production in 1986.

Da kann man den Kollegen nur die Daumen drücken.
Das Muster ist übrigens unter seinem alten Namen "Rockwell Commander" bekannter.
Acht Millionen (auch wenn es nur Dollars sind) für ein neues Werk in die Hand zu nehmen, ist ganz schön mutig. Die Commander hat mir immer schon sehr gut gefallen (eine starke Verwandtschaft zu dem etwas moderneren Design der Socatas ist ja auch unverkennbar, aber gut geklaut ist ja auch ok). Der Preislevel der Gebrauchten liegt aber, verglichen mit anderen Mustern dieser Klasse, immer noch ziemlich hoch. Jedenfalls war das ein sehr solides Flugzeug, angeblich nicht teuer in der Erhaltung, nur in der Anschaffung.

PS: Über eine Wiederaufnahme der Produktion der Socata "Carribean" Serie wurde in letzter Zeit schon etliche Male spekuliert, leider war dann doch nie was dran. Vielleicht wird Daher auch einmal mutiger?
